and have a full tool-box of strategies to make me a more confident
practitioner" - Macmillan participant

Context
– why we needed CChange
Macmillan
runs an annual series of seminar programmes for its post holders
across the country as part of its commitment to continued professional
development.
We
identified that because of the increasing pressures experienced
by staff in their roles, an introduction to the concept of ‘self-management
and motivation' might be a useful addition to professional skills.
CChange
was identified from its ongoing work with Macmillan
in areas of GP Facilitator training and team building programmes
to be an appropriate provider.
The
aims of the training
We
wanted to offer to delegates a self-manager toolkit which, when
used, could support them in maintaining a positive approach to dealing
with change and overcoming the day to day stresses of working in
an ever-evolving health care profession.
How
we worked with CChange
CChange
took us back to basics…they started to plan the
annual programme by discussing the issues that concerned post holders
in their work, and to conduct an audit of the existing strategies
that were used in dealing with change. A programme for the 2 days
emerged and was planned in full consultation with the Macmillan
team who would be responsible for setting up the programme, running
the opening session and the final half-day. This approach left us
feeling in control and excited about the training. We knew were
getting something that would work!
Workshop
content and format:
The
programme took place over a full weekend and
35
Macmillan delegates attended the seminar (Friday afternoon to Sunday
afternoon).
Friday
This
session was facilitated by the lead facilitator from Macmillan.
This interactive session aimed to create an environment of learning
and to set the context for the following day. This was achieved
successfully, with all participants ready for an energising day
on the Saturday.
Saturday
Jim
Lister, our external facilitator from the CChange
Partnership Company was positively evaluated by
every delegate. He had prepared a well structured and organised
day; was fluent and slick in his delivery; used humour very effectively
and his sincerity and genuineness was inspiring to all of us at
the seminar. More importantly, it would appear that people's lives
had been touched during the day.
Programme
Content:
- Perceptual positioning
- Internal dialogue
- Re-framing
- Anchoring
- Self-manager formula
- Giving positive acknowledgement
Sunday
Morning
This
session was called “Sharing Reflections” as we appreciated that
the group would have gained a lot of new knowledge on the Saturday
and needed time to process this. We also wanted to cover the issue
of sustaining these resources and look at support strategies that
would help.
Outcomes
of our work with CChange
Partnership
This
was the first time Programme B had been delivered; therefore it
was important so that we could establish the response of the postholders
in terms of the usefulness of the programme to their work and personal
lives.
Feedback
from participants about the training can be summarized as follows:
- Participants felt they had gained
insight, knowledge and tools to stop, reflect and be empowered
to use inner resources to be more effective in their working and
home life.
- They gained insight into their own
behaviour patterns which could empower them to change positively.
- The programme raised an awareness
of inner strengths; beliefs in abilities to cope and take charge
of their lives.
- Skills such as Perceptual positioning
were found to be of huge interest and value because of the practical
nature of the technique and its relevance in understanding the
motivation of ourselves and another person with whom we may be
experiencing conflict and uncertainty.
- Anchoring techniques were evaluated
as having a positive influence on practice and attitude.
- Sphere of influence concept helped
participants to manage anxiety.
